Ocean Safety officials announced online registration for the 2018 Keiki and Junior Lifeguard programs will begin today.

The programs are free and designed to teach youth ocean safety and lifesaving skills. Additionally, it covers drug awareness, physical conditioning and competition skills.

The Junior Lifeguard Program is open to youth ages 12 to 17 who can swim and run 100 yards nonstop.

The Keiki Lifeguard Program is available to children ages 8 to 11 who can swim and run 50 yards nonstop.

The free week-long program runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following dates:

  • June 4 to 8, at Salt Pond Beach
  • June 11 to 15, at Hanalei Bay
  • June 18 to 22, at Kalapakī Beach
  • June 25 to 29, at Salt Pond Beach
  • July 9 to 13, at Hanalei Bay
  • July 16 to 20, at Kalapakī Beach

Participants can register online on the county’s website, www.kauai.gov/JuniorLifeguardPrograms. A computer for online registrations will also be available weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Fire Department headquarters located at the Līhu’e Civic Center Piikoi Building, 4444 Rice Street, Suite 315.

Registration is limited to 50 participants per site.

Participants will need to bring their own lunch, sunscreen and a towel to the training daily.

Program sponsors include the County of Kaua‘i, Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association, Hawaiian Lifeguard Association, and many generous businesses and individuals.
