The Kauai Police Department recognized the department’s Officer of the Month at Friday’s Police Commission meeting held at the Pi’ikoi Building. In Police Chief Darryl D. Perry’s absence, the award was presented by Assistant Chief Roy Asher along with the police commissioners.
The Administrative & Technical Bureau nominated Sgt. Darla Abbatiello for her work in the Research and Development division, where she oversees background investigators, and has a major role in the hiring process for police officers, dispatchers, civilian workers and police explorers.
“Processing background and personal history packets is an arduous task, particularly with a large number of applicants,” stated Lieutenant Roderick Green of the Administrative and Technical Bureau. “Sgt. Abbatiello and her team are processing an increased number of applicants to help the department fill vacancies as quickly as possible.”
In addition to her assignments in the hiring process, Sgt. Abbatiello is responsible for ordering uniforms and other equipment. Under her direction, the section has implemented a more efficient inventory management system, which will ultimately save the department money.
Throughout the police hiring process, Sgt. Abbatiello takes it upon herself to help prepare applicants and also organizes family days for incoming recruits and their families to help build camaraderie.
“Sgt. Abbatiello is committed to creating a better department,” added Lt. Green. “She consistently goes above and beyond what is expected and is to be commended for her dedication to her peers as well as the community.”
