Friends of King Kaumuali’i inaugurate their 2020-Year of the King Kaumuali’i ‘Ohana Series with a  special Hawaiian Lecture & Performance Demonstration by Kumu Hula, Kēhaulani Kekua of Hālau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai on Thurs.,  Feb. 20th @6:00pm at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, which is cosponsoring the event.

The theme, Maikaʻi Kauaʻi-He Inoa No Kaumualiʻi explores the link between the ancient  and modern link by the verse in both; Maika`i Kaua`i Hemolele I Ka Malie. It is an ancient saying celebrating the incomparable beauty, peace and excellence of Kaua`i Island. The original mele inoa or name chants honors Kaua`i’s paramount Mo`i King Kaumuali`i. Lei I Ka Mokihana, a.k.a Maika`i Kaua`i is ae mele auana that pay tribute to the special beauty of Kaua`i, and written by Henry Waiau, Kumu’s great-grandfather. Now,as then; He Aliʻi ka ʻĀina-the land is the Chief .

Utilizing the gifts left to us by prominent Haku Mele or Hawaiian posts & composers, Kumu Kēhaulani will expand upon the significance of Hula & Hawaiian oral traditions as a means of deepening our appreciation for the vision of Kauaʻi past, present & future.

Complimenting the Thursday event is an opportunity on Sat., Feb. 22,10am, to personalize the experience in a Culture to Canvas Painting Workshop offered at Kumu Kēhaulani’s Studio HAʻA in Kapa’a: Painting the Aliʻi Spirit: Kaumuali’i & Kauaʻi. Using her vast experience as Hula & Cultural Practitioner and Native Artist, Kumu will guide participants to deeper expression of their connection to Kauaʻi & Kaumuali’i.

The presentation & painting workshop are offered in conjunction with a Kauaʻi School Banner Project.  Schools will use the mele to create Banners Hoʻokupu for the Dedication of 8ft. bronze statue of King Kaumualiʻi at his ancestral home, Paʻulaʻula in Waimea later this year.

These events are offered by Friends of King Kaumualiʻi, a cultural & educational 501c3 with support from Sinclair-Knudsen/Hawaii Community Foundation and Hawaii Tourism Authority; and in cooperation with Kauaʻi Complex Department of Education, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School and Hālau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai.
