This news from Bow Construction Management: Work began June 4 to reduce landslides, rocks falling and soil erosionon the hillside from Princeville to Hanalei, just before the Hanalei Bridge. The work will result in frequent lane closures of Kuhio Highway in that vicinity on Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

One lane will be open during most of the working hours, with traffic alternating between northbound and southbound. Two lanes of traffic will be open during all project non-working hours.

On Wednesday June 6, the Princeville-bound lane will be closed while the contractor begins grading the road shoulders. Flagmen will be onsite to ensure traffic flows as smoothly as possible.

Contractor Earthworks Pacific will perform rock scaling; rock demolition using mechanical wedging equipment; removal of large boulders; and the placement and anchoring of a wire mesh system along the slope. The work is expected to be completed by mid-December or sooner, weather permitting.

For your safety and convenience, please plan extra driving time if you need to go through this area.

The Department of Transportation and all construction workers extend a sincere mahalo for your patience while they continue to make Kauai’s roads safe for all of us. For more information, please contact Caroline Sluyter, Hawaii Department of Transportation, (808) 587-2160.
