Restaurant/bar slated to open by week’s end

Over Par snack bar opened its doors last week at the Wailua Golf Course (WGC), and the restaurant/bar is expected to be operational by week’s end.

The snack bar is open daily from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering lite fair including breakfast and lunch bentos, assorted sandwiches, hamburgers and hot dogs, along with packaged snacks and beverages.

“We’re very happy that the Wailua Golf Course will soon be a full-service facility once again,” said Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Ian Costa. “We worked hard to get these services in place and made a number of infrastructure improvements.”

Included on the list of recent improvements to the golf course are the following: scoreboard replacement; upgrades to the maintenance building concrete aprons; replacement of the driving range net; and replacement of the electrical and cable service feeder lines.

Earlier this month, Golf Channel personality Matt Ginella gave the WGC a thumb’s up when he announced his picks for Hawai‘i’s best golf courses.

Ginella reported that his top five Hawai‘i courses are:

1.            Plantation Course – Maui

2.            Hualalai Golf Course – Big Island

3.            Wailua Golf Course – Kaua‘i

4.            The Challenge at Manele – Lāna‘i

5.            Turtle Bay Golf – O‘ahu

The golf expert explained that he selected WGC because it is a very good municipal course.

Parks and Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo credits his staff for the high rating.

“This recognition is a tribute to Ian for his leadership and the golf course staff for their dedication, commitment and hard work,” said Rapozo.

A full slate of events are lined up at the WGC this year including the John A. Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament, Feb. 18 to 21, which will bring 18 teams to the island, and numerous annual tournaments sponsored by local organizations.

The Wailua Golf Course is open daily from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
