Administrators Award goes to Local Hawai`i Small Firms

Honolulu – The U. S. Small Business Administration will honor four local small businesses that have excelled in the Federal Government Contracting arena at the 25th Annual SBA Small Business Awards Luncheon on May 9, 2012.  The Hawai`i based firms – Oceanit Laboratories, CDS International, Kalaka Nui and Mega Construction, Inc. – were nominated for outstanding performance, innovative solutions, cost effectiveness and on-time delivery by the federal agencies and prime contractors that use their services.

Led by Patrick Sullivan, Oceanit Laboratories is small business with demonstrated success in delivering breakthrough solutions for complex multidisciplinary problems for a wide range of State and Federal customers including the Department of Defense Missile Defense Agency, Special Operations Command, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Science Foundation and Homeland Security.   Oceanit’s staff of 160 occupies offices and state-of-the art laboratories in Hawai`i (Honolulu, Kihei, and Lihu`e), Arlington, Virginia, and San Francisco, California.  The company is honored with an Award of Excellence for Prime Contractors and was nominated by Air Force Flight Center at Edwards Air Force Base.

CDS International will receive an SBA Administrator’s Award for Excellence as a Small Business Subcontractor in recognition of their successful execution on multiple Design-Build projects of varying purpose, size and complexity.  CDS International is a woman owned architectural firm whose Executive Vice President Carol Sakata is an acclaimed architect with an impressive record of certifications, awards and community service.  Sakata’s firm was nominated by Senior Vice President Eugene Bucci, dck Pacific Construction.

An Administrator’s Award of Excellence for subcontracting will also be presented to Mega Construction President Marnie Koga Hursty.  Mega Construction provides work for large construction contractors to include exaction, utilizes, grading, surfacing, topsoil and concrete work.  The company has grown to 20 employees and demonstrates an excellent safety record, cost effective management, and ability to execute difficult projects on time and within budget.  The small business was nominated by Richard Heltzel of Healy Tibbitts Builders, Inc.

Kalaka Nui, Inc., a Native Hawaiian, woman owned trucking company with expertise in demolition and civil site work, is a subcontracting honoree for 2012.  Owned by Nowell Dudoit-Alana, the company has 20 years of experience providing customers with professional services at competitive prices and excellent results as well as quality training for personnel in safety procedures and equipment operation. Kalaka Nui was nominated by Chris Mathies of Nova Group.

The 25th Annual Statewide SBA Awards Luncheon will be held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in the Coral Ballroom on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Hosted by SCORE, the luncheon will also feature the “Winner’s Circle,” a special business expo for award winners to showcase their products and services.
