Amy Hānaiali‘i’s talent is the result of a blend of classical training, modern musical influences and heritage. Raised on Maui, Hānaiali‘i was raised with the sounds of cultural chants, ancestral drum beats and kani ka pila (music played with family and friends). Hanaiali’i’s parents, Lloyd and Mimi Gilliom, had the foresight to enroll their children in youth theatre – fostering their daughter’s talents and opening horizons to new sounds and beats. While Hānaiali‘i received years of formal musical and theatrical training, it was Tūtū Jennie who ultimately inspired her to grow in Hawaiian music. Recognizing her natural vocal abilities, Tūtū arranged for a meeting between the legendary Genoa Keawe and her granddaughter. It was Aunty Genoa who introduced her to the ha‘i falsetto music for which she is known today.
Hanaiali’i is Hawai`i’s top selling female vocalist of all time and winner of 17 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and 5 Grammy nominations. She and her band will perform at Tahiti Nui in Hanalei from 7 to 9 p.m. March 8 and 9.
