Growing Food, Community, Green Jobs 1.16.13

Kekaha Community Garden is the brain-child of Diane Shoemaker with groundbreaking in March 2011 after 2 years of planning with a group of Kekaha residents.  Since the grand opening, the Garden has grown from just a few members scratching in the dirt to an entire community support system with programs ranging from Food Nutrition/Cooking courses and informational workshops to Field Trips and Life Lab for schools to participate in.  Currently, the Garden has hosted over 300 children from area schools to introduce and teach the health and life benefits of gardening.  Workshops that are currently available for the public are a Free Compost Bin Events, where not only do participants receive a free compost bin, but they can learn how to use it and maximize it’s usefulness; a Bee Basics workshop on Sunday, Jan. 20^th from 3-6 pm, participants can learn the critical role that bees play, how to care for a hive and how to harvest and process honey.  Additionally, we have another Food Nutrition/ Cooking 4 week course coming up in February on Tuesday evenings from 5-8pm.  This course in which participants learn and cook healthful recipes prepared by a master chef is a huge hit and sells out fast!

Kekaha Community Garden does much more than just offer organic food to members, classes and workshops to the community and educational options for local students; in 2012, the garden has also distributed well over 300 lbs of fresh, organic food to various west-side Food Pantries to support the less fortunate
