Marie Françoise enjoys some wine at sunset at Kalalau Beach in August. Despite a few Hawaiian proverbs making fun of Kalalau because of the meaning of the word “lalau”— which means to go astray — the beauty and remoteness of the place only help one to refocus on what is important in life.

Hala i Kaua‘i i Kalalau.

“Gone to Kalalau, on Kaua‘i.”

Said of one who is off-course mentally or is off gadding somewhere; a blunderer. A play on lalau (to go astray).
