KPD launches new Online Crime Reporting System

The Kaua‘i Police Department on Monday launched its Online Crime Reporting System, offering the public a new way to submit a police report.

            “Our staff has been working diligently on utilizing advanced technology to improve efficiency and communication within our department and the community,” said Acting Chief of Police Michael Contrades. “We’re happy to finally launch our new Online Crime Reporting System, which is designed to make it easier and more convenient for the public to file non-emergency police reports.”

            The public should not report emergencies through KPD’s Online Crime Reporting System. If a crime is in progress or if someone is hurt, threatened, or in danger, the public should call 911 immediately.

            The following types of incidents can now be reported online:

·         Lost Property – When property is missing or lost.

·         Criminal Property Damage (Graffiti) – When an unknown person marks personal or private property with graffiti, spray paint, etching tool or other writing instrument.

·         Criminal Property Damage 3^rd – When an unknown person changes, modifies or destroys public or private property (other than by fire) in an amount exceeding $500 but less than $1,499.99.

·         Criminal Property Damage 4^th – When an unknown person changes, modifies or destroys public or private property (other than by fire) in an amount less than $499.99.

·         Theft of Property 3^rd – Value of Property is between $250 and $749.99 or Theft of Gas not exceeding $750.00. When an unknown person takes your property without permission. This does not include someone physically taking something from your person by force, fear, assault, threats or use of a weapon.

·         Theft of Property 4^th – Value of Property does not exceed $250.00. When an unknown person takes your property without permission. This does not include someone physically taking something from your person by force, fear, assault, threats or use of a weapon.

·         Theft – Shoplifting (suspect not in custody) – Value of Property does not exceed $749.99. When an unknown person steals inventory from a licensed business. Incidents are reported by the business owner or agent for the business. This does not include amounts disputed between the customer and the business.

·         Miscellaneous Public – Civil Matter – Includes incidents that are civil in nature. A civil dispute is a legal disagreement between two or more parties or organizations. It is distinguished from a criminal dispute in that it does not involve statutory laws and does not require the involvement of the state as a principle party.

To file a police report online, visit http://www.kauai.gov/KPD-Online-Reporting and follow the instructions given. You must be at least 18 years old with a valid email address to submit a police report online.

Upon completion of submitting a report online, you will receive an emailed confirmation and will be given a temporary report number. The submitter will be able to print a copy of the report for their records. All cases filed through KPD’s Online Crime Reporting System will be reviewed, and if further investigation is needed the person who filed the report will be contacted by an officer.

The public is reminded that anyone who intentionally files a false police report commits a crime in violation of Hawaii Revised Statue §710-1015. False reporting to law-enforcement authorities is a misdemeanor, and penalties include being fined and/or imprisoned up to one year in jail.
