The Board of Land and Natural Resources approved on March 22 a request from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife to temporarily close the Pua Loke Arboretum in Lihu‘e “to make state and county facilities enhancements,” according to a DLNR news release last week.

DOFAW plans to use a portion of the arboretum, just east of the Kukui Grove Shopping Mall, to expand its base of operations. DLNR and Kaua‘i County are in discussion about the county’s potential use of some of the property.

The closure will allow this area to be cleaned and readied for temporary fencing prior to any construction activities in the area. DLNR and Kaua‘i County leadership are continuing discussions regarding the ultimate uses of the arboretum, according to DLNR.
