‘Let’s Talk’ with Visionary Women — Champions of Peace and Nonviolence

The Kaua‘i Committee on the Status of Women will join the Women’s History Month celebration this upcoming week by hosting an event at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e.

“Let’s Talk,” featuring Renae Hamilton-Cambeilh and Gina Kaulukukui as guest speakers will he held March 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event follows this year’s theme of Women’s History Month: Visionary Women — Champions of Peace and Nonviolence.

Women’s History Month was first celebrated in 1987, after the United States Congress passed a resolution. Since 1988, each U.S. president has proclaimed March as Women’s History Month.

The seed for the nationwide event was planted back in 1911, when the U.S. first celebrated International Women’s Day. In 1978, a California school began celebrating the week of March 8 as Women’s History Week. In the following year, a group of people participating in a 15-day conference decided to push for expanding Women’s History Week, and also to support an effort for a nationwide celebration. So in 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as Women’s History Week. The effort gained so much support that seven years later it became a month-long celebration.
