Council Candidates to Discuss Climate Change in Final Forum Tonight

The mock Kaua‘i County Council meeting tonight will give a last look at the candidates vying for a spot in the top seven seats in the upcoming General Election.

The public is invited to join Community Coalition Kaua‘i and North Shore co-sponsors on tonight for a “Mock Council” candidate forum at the Porter Pavilion at the Anaina Hou Community Park in Kilauea, focusing on climate change.

Doors open at 5 p.m. to talk with the candidates and enjoy food and beverages for purchase. The forum starts at 6 p.m.

This is the last Kaua‘i County Council candidate forum for the 2018 election in a series of six by Community Coalition Kaua‘i and more than 17 community organizations around Kaua‘i. This event is co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay, Kilauea Neighborhood Association, Princeville Neighborhood Association, Kaua‘i North Shore Community Foundation, Hanalei-to-Haena Community Association and Anaina Hou Community Park.

This forum aims to address whether the candidates can critically consider if Kaua‘i is resilient enough to weather the impacts of climate change and how to respond as the early signals have begun to arrive on island this year.

High school student panelists from around the island will open the evening with short presentations about both the science and their personal experiences responding to climate change impacts on Kaua‘i. The candidates will then deliberate on the top three priorities they think the county should take in preparing for the impacts of climate change, just as they would in a realistic situation as a council member.

The forum will be broadcast live on KKCR – Kaua‘i Community Radio, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. 88.9 FM on Oʻahu, 90.9 FM Northshore Kauaʻi, 91.9 FM across Kauaʻi and Niʻihau, 92.7 FM Koʻolau Kauaʻi. Live audio streaming and recording of this event will be available on kkcr.org.
