The County Department of Public Works and Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. will hold an open house and presentation on the Līhu‘e Town Core Revitalization project Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Wilcox Elementary School Cafeteria, according to a County of Kaua‘i news release.

This open house and presentation will provide information and status of the project, including an overview of the phasing of the construction work anticipated to be completed by late 2019.

“The Līhu‘e Town Core Mobility and Revitalization project will improve safety for all users, including those driving, walking, bicycling, and taking transit,” Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr said. “It will increase the number of full-time parking spaces along Rice Street to support economic development.”

The project includes streetscape improvements, development of a transit hub, new and expanded sidewalks, a shared-use path, improved bus stops and bike facilities, safer pedestrian crossings, and dedicated on-street parking.

This project is funded in part from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program. In 2015, the County of Kaua‘i was awarded this $15.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The county will fund an additional $2 million to the project. TIGER grants are targeted investments for local communities that increase safety, create jobs, and modernize the country’s infrastructure.
