The 15th Annual ‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange Statewide Student Video Competition, presented by Sony has announced the 2018 finalists from over 980 submissions — a record number for the state’s oldest and largest contest of its type, according to a news release.
The finalist videos were created by students who attend a program record 100 public, charter and private schools all across Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i Island and Maui counties.
Judges selected finalists based on subject impact and technical production. These panels included local news media, filmmaking professionals and, in the case of sponsored categories, subject experts.
High-definition Sony digital video cameras will be awarded to the winning schools in each of the divisional categories on the morning of Thursday, April 26 at the Awards Gala at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.
The live cablecast of the ‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange Awards Gala will air April 26 starting at 10:30 a.m. on Channel 49, as well as streamed live at www.olelo/49 and YouTube at youtube.com/olelocm. The cablecast will also be made available for viewing within 48 hours on ‘Ōlelo Video On-Demand Channel 52, at www.youtube.com/olelocm and on olelo.org/olelonet.
Last year, more than 800 educators, student-producers and guests from across the state celebrated the finalist videos at the 2017 ‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange awards banquet.
‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange was developed to help give island keiki a voice to tell stories in a variety of video formats and about subjects that are meaningful to them.
This year, Youth Xchange videos competed in 16 categories.
The five broad categories include mini-documentary, public service announcement, short, Expert and Junior Expert.
The 11 sponsored categories include Assessments — Setting Yourself Up for Success, Creating Peace, Fight the Bite, Forest Inspired, Me and the Law, No Vape, Start Living Healthy, Storm Water Hero, The Value of Water, Traffic Safety and Vote to Rise.
Students in ‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange compete in three age divisions: elementary, intermediate and high school. Previous winners and students with professional experience compete in the Junior Expert (kindergarten through middle school) and Expert (high school and college) categories.
‘Ōlelo is committed to airing programs of community interest on its cable channels: 49, 53, 54 and 55, as well as in high-definition on 1049 and 1053 (Hawaiian Telcom).
