He Inoa No Kaumualiʻi Hoʻolauleʻa–Sat., Oct. 7th; 10am-4pm at the Old Waimea Sugar Mill is a festival that will share our rich heritage in much the same way as our ‘ohana did over 200 years ago.
Join Friends of King Kaumuali’i in honoring Kauaʻi’s beloved King, while celebrating the Makahiki season– a time when peace and prosperity prevailed. Festivities include, hula, music, handwork, food and other entertainment.

Event will include:
Nā Mele O Kaumuali’i- Musicians and halau of all ages, from keiki to kupuna will share new haku mele honoring Kaumualiʻi, the last king of Kaua’i, who was beloved for his peaceful and wise reign. They will also perform mele and hula singing the praises of renown places on our beautiful garden island.

Na Hana Noʻeau will provide opportunities for “make-it/take-it” traditional crafts lead by kupuna and other experienced instructors. Using natural materials, participants will make items such as lei, lauhala bracelets, ornaments, hulu hair adornments, and kapa-like printing using native design. Or enjoy playing konane, Hawai’i’ s tricky, game of strategy. Rather than a event which only sells crafts, we offer festival-goers opportunities to create their own Kauaʻi experience, while sharing personal and cultural stories with local folk.

Na Keiki Art Contest will showcase students’ creative talent integrating HĀ-Hawaiian values and Kaumuali’i history into art, letting the picture tell the story (mo’olelo). Specifically the theme this year will be Young Kaumualiʻi- Exemplary Learner & Athlete. Display, judging and awards will occur at the event.

Free admission. Local food, snacks and crafts available for purchase. Silent auction, historic, school and other local projects on display.
