Kevin Carney, Vice President, EAH Housing, Gov. David Ige, Makani Maeva, President and CEO of Ahe Group, County Housing Director Kanani Fu, Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and Council Chair Mel Rapozo express their delight in untying the maile lei. The ceremony marks the official opening of Kaniko‘o Phase II, an affordable rental complex for seniors that is set to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum certification.

A blessing was held last week to mark the completion of Kaniko‘o Phase II, an affordable rental complex for seniors in Līhu‘e. The project adds 30 units to the island’s inventory and brings the total number of units at the Līhu‘e complex to 90, according to a county press release.

“Facilitating affordable housing opportunities for Kaua‘i residents continues to be one of our top priorities,” Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. said. “We are so pleased that more kupuna now have the opportunity to live in an affordable place that’s close to the services they need.”

Kanani Fu, Kaua‘i County Housing Director, acknowledged the collaboration involved in this project.

“An achievement like Kaniko‘o takes the support of countless advocates, organizations and local and state governments. All of the partners in this project have a true sense of commitment to quality affordable housing and understand what it takes to support a thriving community,” Fu said.

Key partners in the Līhu‘e project include: Vitus Group; Ahe Group; EAH Housing; County Council; County Housing Agency; U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); Hawai‘i Housing Finance and Development Corp. (HHFDC); Shioi Construction; Department of Public Works; Department of Water; Kaua‘i Fire Department; Department of Planning; and the Office of the County Attorney.

Kaniko‘o is in line with the mayor’s Holo Holo 2020 vision for Kaua‘i. His vision calls for all organizations, businesses, residents and visitors on Kaua‘i to be part of creating an island that is sustainable, values the native culture, has a thriving and healthy economy, cares for all — keiki to kupuna — and has a responsible and user-friendly local government.
