Sierra Club Hikes & Beach Clean Ups  – October to December 2016

Sunday, October 9
Maha’ulepu and Makauwahi Cave on the South Shore -A moderate 4-mile hike. This magnificent coastline is unique with its fascinating craggy rock limestone formations. Not to be missed. Visit the world class archaeological cave site. Allan Rachap 212-3108

Wednesday, October 12
Kawai’ele Waterbird Sanctuary. West Side/Easy. Sunset to dusk visit to the sanctuary, home to all four of Hawaii’s endemic birds: the Hawaiian Stilt, Moorhen and Coot, and Koloa duck. Nene, the Hawaiian bat and Black Crowned Night Heron also frequent the sanctuary. We’ll also point out the many native species of plants at the sanctuary. Bob Nishek 346-0476

Saturday, October 22
Donkey Beach Clean Up.Surfrider and Sierra Club team up to help protect marine life, the reef and ocean from litter and fishing net entanglement. Look for banners at the parking lot above Donkey Beach, between the 11 and 12-mile highway markers by Public Shoreline Access sign. 9AM until noon. Bring hat and water. Bags, gloves, and snacks provided. Judy Dalton 482-1129

Saturday, November 12
Honopu. Koke’e State Park. A moderate 4-mile hike winds through native forest out to spectacular views of the Honopu valley and the NaPali coast. Ken Fasig 346-1229

Monday, November 14
Waimea Canyon Road Cleanup. Afternoon clean-up of Sierra Club’s adopted highway requires a little over an hour. Please help keep the gateway to Waimea Canyon litter-free. Bob Nishek 346-0476

Sunday, November 20
Maha’ulepu and Makauwahi Cave. Enjoy the majestic, rugged ancient sand-dune area of Maha`ulepu, home to many coastal plants. Visit the world class archaeological cave site. moderate 4 miles round trip. Allan Rachap 212-3108

Saturday, November 26
Kealia Beach Cleanup. Surfrider and Sierra Club collaborate to protect the marine and other wildlife, the reef, and ocean from marine debris. Will you please help? Look for banners at parking lot. Bring your water and hat. We’ll supply gloves, bags, and refreshments. 9 AM to noon. Judy Dalton 482-1129

Nukoli’i Beach Clean Up. Surfrider and Sierra Club team up for a clean up. Help remove litter which poses a threat to sea birds and marine life. Bring hat and water. We’ll have other refreshments. Look for signs along the highway where to turn in or call Judy Dalton 482-1129
