International Day of Peace on Kaua`i Sunday, September 18th

Everybody is invited to celebrate The International Day of Peace at Lydgate Park (main pavilion) Sunday, September 18, 2016, 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., sponsored by the Interfaith Roundtable of Kauai (IROK). This years’ United Nations theme for this event is “Peace and Sustainability.” The event is free. Come celebrate peace for people and the earth at Lydgate Park Main Pavilion (near Kamalani Playground) with food, music, dancing, plus information on sustainability and peace.

The program will feature powerful performances by the Joyful Noise taiko drummers led by Aki Conquest; an appearance by Mayor Bernard Carvalho; an open microphone for music and poetry, information on sustainability and conflict resolution, as well as crafts and activities for children of all ages. It will conclude with peace prayers around the Peace Pole followed by the release of peace doves. The International Day of Peace was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 2001.

In 2007, Hawaii became the first state in the nation to officially commemorate Peace Day in harmony with the UN resolution. IROK has sponsored an annual celebration of peace every year since. IROK was formed in 2005 to bring together representatives of all religions to encourage harmony, understanding, and community service from an interfaith cooperative stance.
