Blessing held for Līhu‘e crosswalk, shared use path

A blessing was held last week to mark the completion of an enhanced crosswalk on Rice Street and an adjoining shared use path. The concrete path runs from Rice Street to Ho’ala Street alongside Kalapakī Villas and Līhu‘e Court Townhomes.
The 500-foot long path serves to connect the Līhu‘e Court Townhomes, Kaniko’o senior housing, and other area residences with nearby shopping, jobs, social services and educational facilities.
The path is part of a larger bicycle and pedestrian network planned for the Līhu‘e Town Core.
Funding for the $247,700 project was provided through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Expressing his excitement about the newly completed path, Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. thanked all of the parties involved who helped to bring the project to fruition including: the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; County Council; County Housing Agency; Department of Public Works; Department of Planning; Līhu‘e Court Townhomes; Earthworks Pacific Inc.; and Get Fit Kaua‘i.
“When everyone works together for the greater good, these are the kinds of things that can be achieved. As a result of this collaboration, residents in the area can now safely walk or ride their bicycles to school or work or go shopping and so on. This path increases the mobility options for people of all ages and abilities,” said the mayor.
He noted that Līhu‘e Town is transforming into a more walkable, bikeable, and transit friendly community with the completion of the new path, Hardy Streets improvements and future TIGER grant improvements.
Former Mayor Mary Anne Kusaka, who served as mayor when the Līhu‘e Court Townhomes were built, was also present at the blessing.
Other dignitaries in attendance included: Kaulana Finn, field representative for U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard; Carrice Gardner, Gov. David Ige’s Kaua‘i Liaison; State Rep. James Tokioka; Councilmembers Mason Chock and Ross Kagawa; and Brian Alston and Roland Ruiz with Mutual Housing, management company of the Līhu‘e Court Townhomes.
