The Nature of Seeds: Why Some Seeds Sleep and Other Curious Questions

The secret life of plants is something we will never fully understand. But what we already know is quite amazing. Next Tuesday, the National Tropical Botanical Garden and Kaua‘i Community College will again team up for a thought-provoking talk-story.

“The Nature of Seeds: Why Some Seeds Sleep and Other Curious Questions” is a free lecture by Dr. Carol Baskin, in KCC’s cafeteria May 24 at 5:30 p.m.

The fifth lecture in NTBG-KCC’s “What in the World” series will explore the tiny world of seeds as Dr. Baskin, a plant ecology professor at the University of Kentucky, reveals how a seed’s timing affects its habitat. Baskin will also discuss diversity in seed germination and dormancy from a global perspective and in comparison with the seeds of Hawaiian plants.

In her talk, Baskin will illuminate the cycle of seed germination, maturation and reproduction in relation to a seed’s timing, and explain what makes some seeds more successful than others and explore why not all seeds “sleep.”

The “What in the World” lecture series goes on hiatus June through August, resuming from September. This series is one of the many collaborations between the nonprofit NTBG and KCC. Both share a common goal of quality education.

NTBG is a nonprofit institution, headquartered in Kalāheo. KCC, which is part of the University of Hawai‘i system, operates a large campus in Puhi.
