In Memoriam: The Rev. Malcolm Miner

The Reverend Malcolm H. Miner of Po`ipu Beach, Kaua`i, passed on to the next world on Monday, April 9, the day after Easter, at the age of 91. Malcolm was born on November 15, 1920 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine and the Master of Divinity degree from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. He was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church on June 17, 1950, at Christ Church, South Barre, Massachusetts.

Malcolm lived an extraordinary life with a rich and vibrant ministry as a pastor, teacher, writer, father, grandfather, husband and healer. After serving as an Associate Rector in Warwick, Rhode Island, Malcolm was a missionary priest in Alaska, and from 1956 to 1962 served as Rector of All Saints Church in Anchorage, Alaska. He also served as Minister of Healing for the Diocese of Alaska, Executive Director of the United Way of Anchorage, and Regional Warden and President of the Order of Saint Luke the Physician. In Seaside, California, Malcolm was Rector of St. Matthias Church from 1963 to 1969. On Kaua`i, Malcolm served as Interim Rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Kapa`a, and since 1989 as Priest Associate of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihu`e. He is the author of three books: Healing is For Real, Healing and the Abundant Life, and Your Touch Can Heal. He has lectured on the ministry of healing throughout the world.

Malcolm is survived by Imogene Hagensen Miner, his wife of 23 years, and three children: Ladona Minerva (Lance Anderson); Linda (Rick) Kimberly; and Philip (Adriana) Miner; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Father Malcolm Miner was beloved by many on the island of Kaua`i and far beyond. He was known for his compassionate care, healing touch, loving embrace, engaging smile, affirming laugh, wonderful sense of humor, inclusive theology, quick wit, exuberant spirit and wise words. Malcolm Miner was one of a kind and truly lived out his calling as the person that God created him to be. He loved deeply and lived fully.

There will be a Celebration of Malcolm’s life on Saturday, April 21st at 4 p.m. at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 4364 Hardy Street in Lihue, with a reception in the Parish Hall to follow. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Malcolm’s legacy may contribute to the Malcolm Miner Memorial Fund at St. Michael’s Church.
