Motorists are advised that approximately 0.7 miles of Kainahola Road in Kapahi will be closed for about seven months beginning May 18 due to a project to breach the Upper Kapahi Dam.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is responsible for the Upper Kapahi Dam Breach project
The scope of work includes demolition of the roadway surface, excavation of the roadway embankment, construction of a triple box culvert at the base of the dam, and reconstruction of the roadway. As part of a future project, the dam is proposed to be replaced with a new dam upstream of the existing dam.
Work on the dam and roadway will take place Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Motorists will need to seek alternate routes to get to their destinations and allow extra travel time while the project is underway.
Anyone with questions about this project may contact Mike Lugauer with Jennings Pacific, LLC at 645-0648, or Wynne Ushigome with the Department of Public Works at 241-4890.
