GEORGE KAHUMOKU JR. AND RICHARD HO’OPI’I RECEIVE 2015 NA HOKU HANOHANO AWARDS NOMINATIONS

Maui musicians George Kahumoku Jr. and Richard Ho`opi`i, have been nominated in the 2015 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. George is nominated for Slack Key Album of the Year and Richard, for Male Vocalist of the Year and Hawaiian Music Album of the Year. Additionally Richard will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts (HARA).

Richard’s CD, Richard Ho`opi`i – The Timeless Voice, includes many of his most renowned works including songs of his northern Maui home in the village Kahakuloa, and songs like “Sweet Lei Lehua” and “Hawaiian Cowboy” featuring the unique Ho`opi`i falsetto style which is ramped up with elements of yodeling. The tracks were recorded at the church in Kahakuloa, and at George Kahumoku Jr.’s Slack Key Show in Napili on Maui. All tracks are live are wonderful snapshots of Uncle Richard’s incredible sound and timeless voice. A DVD film documentary about him is included with the CD in the package.

George’s work, Seeds of Aloha, is also a film and soundtrack dual DVD and CD. The Hokus do not offer a documentary category and so just the CD is nominated. Seeds of Aloha features a career spanning selection of songs including 9 of which have not been recorded before. It includes his popular “Ho`okupu” song about the legendary Pele & Kamapua`a, as well as newer works about his Kahakuloa home. Both instrumental and vocal songs are featured in his distinctive 12-string slack key guitar style. The audio CD follows a semi biographic and chronologic song order beginning with songs that George heard as a child, moving through early songs he played as a soloist and with his brother Moses as The Kahumoku Brothers, and concluding with both solo and collaborative tracks that highlight his performing and touring career.

Richard is the featured artist this week at George Kahumoku Jr’s Slack Key Show – Masters of Hawaiian Music at the Napili Kai Beach Resort on Maui, Wednesday and Thursday (April 8 & 9, 7:30 p.m., tickets at 669-3858). Both artists will be featuring song selections from their nominated CDs which will be available for sale and autographs.
