Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity and Lowe’s invite women to volunteer during National Women Build Week

Women to build homes nationwide in partnership with low-income families May 2-10

Women on Kaua‘i are invited to help address the need for affordable housing throughout the community during Habitat for Humanity’s eighth annual National Women Build Week. Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity is one of more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide hosting Women Build projects with support from Lowe’s, Habitat’s longtime partner in the event.

On May 9th, 2015, local volunteers will begin construction on the first set of homes in phase II of the ‘Ele‘ele Iluna Subdivision in ‘Ele‘ele, HI.

National Women Build Week, held May 2-10, challenges women to devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 62,000 women from all 50 states have volunteered in previous years.

“We are excited to participate in National Women Build Week,” said Stephen Spears, executive director of Kaua‘i Habitat. “This is a great opportunity for women of all skill levels to come together to help a family in need of better housing.”

Lowe’s helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008, and each year provides the support of Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteers and conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach volunteers construction skills. This year, Lowe’s contributed nearly $2 million to National Women Build Week. Since its partnership began in 2003, Lowe’s has committed more than $63 million to Habitat and helped nearly 4,000 families improve their living conditions.

Lowe’s and Habitat invite men and women across America to help make the dream of homeownership a reality for a family in their community – no construction skills are necessary. To volunteer or donate to this project, call(808) 335-0296 ext. 152 or email volunteer@KauaiHabitat.org. For more information on National Women Build Week, visit Habitat.org/wb

About Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity

Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an ecumenical, nonprofit, Christian housing ministry. Its mission is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world – one house at a time on Kaua‘i – and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through volunteer and homeowner labor, and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses. The affiliate is also a proud partner agency of Kauai United Way.

Kaua‘i Habitat features two main home building programs: New Home Construction Program and Repair and Renovation Program. Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity also operates ReStore®, which sells new and used discounted building and construction materials and household items. Proceeds from ReStore® support Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build decent, affordable housing.

Since 1992 Kaua‘i Habitat has built 117 affordable homes and made critical repairs to 22 existing homes for Kaua‘i families whose household income is between 30-80% of the median Kaua`i income. Because the critical need for affordable housing continues to persist on our island, Kaua`i Habitat has pledged to scale up our capacity and build our next 100 homes before the next decade.

Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity is pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the Nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.
