New high school and middle school courses on English fundamentals, logic and critical thinking, and study skills rank among the offerings on the 2012 summer school schedule at Island School.

Presented by Island School’s new language arts teacher, Judah Freed, the three programs run consecutively from June 18 to July 13.

English Fundamentals, meeting Monday to Friday for two weeks from June 18 to June 29, will review and reinforce the basics of grammar, punctuations and spelling. A section for middle school students entering grades 6 to 8 will meet 8 a.m. to noon. A high school section for students entering grades 9 to 12 will meet 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuition is $300.

Logic and Critical Thinking, meeting Monday to Friday for one week from July 2 to July 6, will covers the logical syllogism for deductive and inductive reasoning as applied to critical thinking and problem-solving. Intended for high school students entering grades 9 to 12, the class meets 8 a.m. to noon except for July 4. Middle school students may enroll with instructor permission. Tuition is $175.

Study Skills, meeting Monday to Friday for one week from July 9 to July 13, will cover how to read textbooks, take class notes, prepare for tests, and take exams. Designed for middle school students entering grades 6 to 8, the class meets from 8 a.m. to noon. High school students may enroll with instructor permission. Tuition is $200.

Instructor Judah Freed is joining the faculty of Island School in autumn 2012 to teach American literature and other language arts programs. A seasoned educator, journalist and award-winning author of Global Sense, he’s been teaching youth and adults since the 1970s, most recently through continuing education courses at Kaua‘i Community College.
