Six shelters scheduled for first phase

A blessing was held this afternoon in Kapahi marking the start of the construction phase of the county’s island-wide bus shelter project.
Initially, six shelters will be erected in the following locations: Waimea, next to Ishihara Market; Hanapēpē, next to the armory; Lāwa‘i, across from the post office; Hanamā‘ulu near Laukona Road; Kapahi, across the Menehune Food Mart and Kīlauea, next to the Menehune Food Mart.
The remaining bus shelters will be constructed over the next few years as funding becomes available.
“There are so many people to thank that helped to bring this project to fruition, starting with the community, who provided input on the prioritization of the bus shelters to be built first as well as the aesthetic features of the shelters. There were county and state agencies involved in the plan approval process, and the design consultant completed the engineering and design work,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr.
The mayor also acknowledged the organizations that have committed to putting up the shelters including the Boy Scouts, Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council, the Rotary and Lions clubs, as well as others.
The island-wide bus shelter project is one of 38 initiatives that are part of Mayor Carvalho’s Holo Holo 2020 vision.
The vision calls for all organizations, businesses, residents and visitors on Kaua’i to be part of creating an island that is sustainable, values the native culture, has a thriving and healthy economy, cares for all – keiki to kupuna – and has a responsible and user-friendly local government.
