KIUC offers $30 worth of LED bulbs for free

If you’re still using old incandescent bulbs, you’re wasting money.

And now there’s an even better bulb than the compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb that’s gotten to be so popular.

Start replacing your old bulbs with a new light emitting diode (LED) bulb and you’ll save on your electric bill. You’ll also help Kauaʻi hit its renewable energy goals and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Kauaʻi Island Utility Cooperative will give away three 60-watt equivalent LED bulbs – worth more than $30 – to residents who stop by Kukui Grove Center’s food court on the following Fridays: June 27, July 25 and Aug. 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“Most stores sell these bulbs for between $10 and $15 apiece, which is why many people haven’t made the switch,” said Kathy Williams, KIUC’s Energy Services Supervisor. “Because we’re a cooperative, we’re all about serving our members, so KIUC is giving these bulbs away for free to help reduce their monthly electric bills.”

LED bulbs use less energy than incandescent and CFL bulbs and the LED bulb stays cool to the touch. And they’re designed to last nearly 23 years.

But the only way to start saving money is to replace your old bulbs right away. Don’t put the LED in a closet and use it only when an old bulb burns out. The sooner you start using an LED, the sooner you’ll save.
