Malcolm W. Stransky of Koloa celebrated his 102nd birthday on April 29.
Born in 1912 in Saskatchewan, Canada, he’d roamed the plains, and as a young man he jumped a freight train to Chicago, where he was one of the 48 million visitors to the “Century of Progress” as the World’s Fair of 1933-34 was called.
Ultimately, Mr. Stransky supported himself in obtaining a degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University by picking celery in summers and working in a dormitory cafeteria during the school year.
He met his wife, Winnie, in college, and they married and raised three children.
Mr. Stransky, now a widower, makes his home with his daughter and her husband — Lynn and David McLernon of Koloa.
