Islander on the Beach

Several visitor-oriented businesses and hotels on Kaua‘i offer lower rates for kama‘aina, or locals. But sometimes, island residents forget about this.

A Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau program wants to spread the word — for free — and make it easier for locals to enjoy a well-deserved staycation.

“The Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau is seeking fun and exciting kama‘aina offers to be included on the Kaua‘i Kama‘aina website,” states a KVB press release earlier this week.

ziplineInclusion on www.KauaiKamaaina.com is free for Kaua‘i tourism companies. Kaua‘i Kama‘aina provides a list of specials for activities and accommodations throughout the island, for local and military families to enjoy, according to KVB.

Submissions for Kama‘aina 2014 offers are currently being accepted along with a description in 55 words or less. KVB said submissions must have a specific offer that provides cost savings and value (no generic listings), and a photo to accompany the offer.

Photos must be JPEG files under 1 MB, with a 72 dpi resolution, 108-pixels tall and 180-pixels wide.

The new offers will go live on www.KauaiKamaaina.com May 1.

KayakIn 2013, the webpage was visited approximately 11,000 times by 4,600 new visitors, providing families with staycation ideas and activities close to home.

KVB is asking participants to ensure offers will be valid from May 1 to Dec. 31, and to indicate blackout dates. The exact dates do not necessarily have to be listed, but rather stated that blackout dates do apply, KVB said. Additionally, include a contact number and/or website.

Deadline for submissions is April 11. There is no cost to participate.
