WHAT: 2015 Ho’olokahi All-State High School Choral Festival

WHO: Island School Alaka’i Chorus

WHERE: Central Union Church, Honolulu

WHEN: Friday & Saturday, February 13 & 14, 2015

The Music Department at Island School is taking the Island School Alaka‘i Chorus to O‘ahu on February 13-14 to participate in the 2015 Ho’olokahi Festival High School Chorus Festival. This event, produced by the Hawai‘i Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, was organized to give Hawai‘i high school singers an opportunity to sing challenging music with a top notch choral clinician. Over 250 high school singers from O‘ahu and Kaua‘i will join together to rehearse for two days before presenting a concert at the Central Union Church in Honolulu. The concert will be conducted by internationally known Venezuelan conductor/composer, Dr. Cristian Grases. Dr. Grases is currently a  professor of choral music and the conductor of the USC Thornton Concert Choir at USC Thornton.

Philip Steinbacher, choral director at Island School, will take 34 members of the Island School Alaka’i Chorus to O‘ahu to join choruses from ‘Iolani School, Punahou School, and eleven other O‘ahu public and private schools to prepare for the culminating concert on February 14. Island School is the only neighbor island school to take advantage of this opportunity, though it is offered to all schools in Hawai’i. “Island School has participated in this festival since its inception in 2011,” said Steinbacher, “and I wouldn’t miss the chance to let my students attend. It’s amazing how they grow in two short days, and I can’t think of a more fun way for my students to experience the value of coming together with others to make music and lifelong memories.
