unnamedTo start its 100th year anniversary celebration in 2014, the Kauai Historical Society has published a 14-month calendar featuring vintage photos by Ray Jerome Baker, W.J. Senda and other photographers who obviously loved the Garden Island. They captured scenes featuring water and surrounding areas as they were in the 1920s to 1960s.

The cover says it all: The Sparkling Waters of Kaua’i sets the theme and the cover photo of the graceful six-arched Wailua River Bridge taken by W.J. Senda in 1920 is the opening scene of this vintage photo album that carries us into the coming year. All photos are in the collection of the Kaua’i Historical Society, which now has over 9,000 digital scans of photos, slides, and negatives. Graphic designer Lori Dill created a nostalgic look for this keepsake calendar that covers the year 2014 and January through February 2015.

These 15 photos are just a sample of the photo collection and volunteers are scanning and cataloging more images continuously. Fine art giclee prints on archival quality paper can also be selected and ordered in various sizes by coming to the office.

Donna Stewart, production editor, says, “The beauty of Kaua’i is nourished by its rivers, streams, waterfalls, rain, mountain mists, and the ocean. From ancient times, these waters have sustained the people of Kaua’i through agriculture, fishing and recreation. This precious water resource must be cared for and conserved into the future.”

Copies of the calendar are available for $15 each at the Kaua’i Historical Society, suite 101 in the historic County Building in Lihu’e.
